According to Color: Messages & Meanings (Eiseman 2006), light blue is second only to white in conjuring up feelings of cleanliness and purity. Dressing the wife in light blue, then, emphasizes that although her husband has sinned, she herself is untainted, and that her cleansing influence is washing over him, helping to clean up the mess he has made.

I thought that Mrs. Spitzer looked very nice in her baby blue Akris jacket - especially considering the circumstances. It's interesting to learn the associations of that color choice in that context! She didn't look nearly as well on Resignation Day in the dark blue jacket (or was it black?) with the colorful scarf. Those colors were too harsh for her, and they only emphasized how haggard she looked. I suppose that the visual message was that she was boldly moving forward.
